About Small Things
The warmest hello and welcome to you from wherever you are. Let me tell you a little about Small Things, why it’s important right now.
You know that fleeting smile that appears on your face as you remember a mundane memory with a loved one, or maybe an impromptu meeting with stranger that leaves you on high? Or perhaps it’s a sigh of relief as you realise a kindness someone has done for you without the need to ask..
Well. In my opinion. Those moments are what add up to a fulfilling, connected, intentional and joyous life and - you guessed it - those moments could and should be celebrated.
The world right now is both heavy with injustices, inequality, ‘what-ifs’ and ‘what can I do’s’ - as well as heavily ‘made up’ by AI (you all saw the rabbits jumping on the trampoline right?!). I wonder if a little more authenticity, human connection and good news stories might help us along our way.
Enter ‘Small Things’.
Small Things to me, is something small, quiet, celebratory - a pause to reflect on how we show up for others, intentionally and wholeheartedly. There’s so much out there about self-help and self-improvement - this is different. This is outward kindness that isn’t grand or showy. It’s those quiet moments: a smile to a stranger, a meme shared between friends. It’s the encouragement, cheerleading, check-ins & peer-to-peer banter.
Where did the idea come from?
After a health scare last year and months of medical treatment, my husband and I were incredibly fortunate to be the recipients of a bucket-load of kindness from all around. We also realised that for some people and under certain circumstances, it can be difficult to know how to help those we love or those in need. Going through something like this for the first time - even we were learning how to show up in a way that’s useful and helpful, for each other, our families and ourselves.
A year has passed since then and life is good. And sitting in a coffee shop in British Columbia - I felt compelled to uncover others tiny moments of joy, connection and kindness because to me that’s what add’s up to a full life. The name ‘small things’ came before I’d had my third sip of strong coffee. And here we are looking forward to the first few newsletters!
Practically speaking, who knows what forms it will take on - for now it’s a monthly newsletter celebrating and inspiring you with lots of small things. Hit subscribe and get these musings right to your inbox on a monthly basis.
